( Both of them wear their ruined clothing with all the more pride, all the more self-assured arrogance. “It is nothing personal,” she says at last, above the cawing of crows. )
1. Spain
“To me, you’re a creature of a lot of very powerful but very simple forces,” she says to him. He blinks at her over the rim of his coffee cup and tilts his head. His mouth is made for smiling, like another man she’s fairly acquainted with at this point, though you don’t see that a lot these days.
“You have a lot of those urges and such swirling in around you, I’m sure,” she continues, gesticulating with her hands as silver and titanium rings on her fingers catch against the light. “Creation and destruction and war and faith and anarchy and all that. I mean- a lot of other countries do too, but you never seem to stray from the basics. It’s all separate colors for you, no in betweens or grays or all that.”
He selects a cookie (a snickerdoodle) and bites into it, leaving cinnamon and nutmeg dusted around his mouth. “I don’t think it has to be nearly that complicated,” he remarks finally, dunking the cookie into his coffee and swirling it around leisurely. “I do things… because I do them.” He smiles at her just a little condescendingly, his bright olive green eyes shadowing for a moment. “It’s just the way I’ve done things,” he says and shrugs.
She doesn’t say anything for a while after that, only sipping her coffee as he leisurely plows through the plate of sweets between them.
2. Romano
She’s a little shorter than he is (and he’s too damn used to people taller than him, like the potato bastard and the tomato bastard). He had smiled at her because that was what he did and she had blushed in response. She had asked him to get a cup of coffee with her and though he normally didn’t acquaint himself with Asians, he found himself agreeing.
Outside the café with the overpriced drinks, they sit side by side as she sips a latte and he toys with the remains of his double espresso.
“You’re very sweet,” she tells him because he insisted on buying her the latte. Then she tilts her head. “And you have a wonderful smile.”
He doesn’t grumble or look away for the moment, especially as she pats him on the shoulder. She’s a baby compared to him, despite the fact that she looks physically older than him.
“Though I suppose sweetness is a little overrated,” she muses aloud as she licks her lips clean of cinnamon dusted foam.
“You seem sweet enough,” he replies without thinking.
She blinks and then laughs. Her laugh isn’t a giggle or a chuckle. It tends to disturb people because it’s a little harsh and a little… odd. He finds himself wincing a little.
“Oh, you really are a dear,” she says, catching her breath.
He mutters something less than pleasant in Italian, probably too soft for her to hear. She pushes her glasses further up the bridge of her nose. Then he says a little too harshly, “I am older than you…”
“In real years, yes.” Her hand pauses, just about to pat his head or perhaps cup his cheek. She touches his shoulder again. Then she smiles and it reaches her eyes completely. “You know… you’re amazing, just the way you are.”
He stares at her as though she just grew a second head. She flushes pinkly, right up to her ears. “I’m serious!” she says, gesturing with her free hand. “You’re amazing! You’re cute and you have nice eyes and that curl is adorable- and when you smile…” She stops, aware that she had just entered that dark zone known as… fangirling. Quietly, she says to him, “And… I know what it’s like to never be enough.”
“Do you?” he asks and his voice is flat, which breaks her heart.
“I do.” She tilts her chin defiantly at him, the effect ruined by the bit of milk at the corner of her mouth. He reaches out with a paper napkin and brushes it off.
“Geh, you’re too hyper,” he grumbles but it doesn’t hold any real malice or rancor.
She shrugs. “Only when it’s around people I like,” she replies. Her smile remains. “And I don’t like a lot of people.” Her fingers leave his shoulder gently.
“Just know,” she says, after slurping the last of her latte. “That I think you’re wonderful. Even if no one else thinks that of you.”
He finds himself wrapping one arm around her shoulders and pulling her against his skinny chest. “Women,” he murmurs and he sounds so old, suddenly. “You always surprise us, eh?”
Sometimes all I want to do is to give Lovino a hug... and tell him that it'll be all right.

( Once you have everything going for you, you have everything to lose. )
Nah, not really. I needed to get something written. I have too many big plot ideas bouncing around in my brain and they're having the "3 Stooges effect," of getting stuck in a doorway that they're trying to get out at the same time. On the brighter side, I thought of a very inappropriate PWP that I think some people might like... (which I had rashly and rather stupidly promised)
This isn't the first Author/Country stuff I've ever written either. These are just shorter... and don't all involve South Korea.
( And I see Korea and Belgium and America and England and Japan... )
The incident in #5 actually did happen to me, by the way.
I put this up on the kink meme and to be honest, I wrote it as a writing exercise for myself. When I find myself locked into massive stories, I have to break away to write drabbles. It keeps me sane and it sometimes helps me get through any parts that I'm struggling with in bigger stories. I'm not much of a Korea/Japan fan, but I find myself writing it every so often, particularly with emphasis on a brotherly sort of relationship and Korea being an absolute ass (in terms of teasing Kiku mercilessly).
Who knows, I might end up writing more in this odd little mafia universe.
